May 10, 2021 Day 23: Springdale UT -- Page AZ

Updated: May 18, 2021

lake Powell very special stones. white color, very peaceful feeling.

Our camping site: Wahweap RV and Campground has two time zones,(AZ & UT) so we can just one step ahead to get one more hour, or one step back to lose one hour. Fun and confusion!

(AZ & UT).

Waiting to get in Zion national park

tunnel built in 1930s at Zion, small and paid $15. 1930s

Scenery change. Weird shop with dog and chickens. Going to the beach. The time difference.

SHIFT

While Zion was rock and trees, where we are now is rocks and river. Zion was mostly red rock with specks of green (and dry, so dry), while here near Lake Powell, the rocks seem nearly green or blue and the water pools suddenly over dry land spotted only with bushes. The campsite itself represented a split. One side is Utah, the other Arizona. Arizona does not observe daylight savings time and on one the Arizona side, the time is one hour earlier than a few steps down the road.

We crossed over this line around dusk. The sky quickly faded from orange into blue into a deep grey, speckled with stars and sparse clouds. The beach near the lake looked strange in the dark - people became shapes and the sand seemed like grey waves of the lake itself. We nearly couldn’t find our dog in the stroller where we had left him on the beach.

The scenery here seems to represent a side of the United States I had not ever expected. The drastic changes have shown me that I have seen a very small part of what it means to live in this country. This was accentuated by the atmosphere of the auto shop where we stopped on the way. Contrary to the polished look and cool professionalism of shops back home, this shop had chickens in cages inside and outside, women in long dresses chatting familiarly with the girl at the register, and the old man enthusiastically walked to our RV and diagnosed our problem.

Oh! The differences in greenery will hit you as you head back East, too. From the desert and red and brown rocks, to yellow-green grasslands, to a little bit greener Mississippi crossing, to full-fledged Appalachian GREEN again. It's always striking.
